APG signs Declaration of Amsterdam for an inclusive and diverse workplace

Published on: 21 December 2023

Today APG marks an important moment in its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion by signing the Declaration of Amsterdam. The declaration, an initiative of Workplace Pride, underscores APG’s commitment to a workplace environment that is inclusive of LGBTQIA+.

At APG’s headquarters in Heerlen, in the presence of the board of APG’s LGBTQIA+ network PROUD, and led by David Pollard, Executive Director of Workplace Pride, and the full APG executive board, including board member Ronald Wuijster, APG affirmed its support for this important initiative.

Ronald Wuijster is proud of this milestone: “By signing this statement, we commit ourselves to LGBTQIA+ inclusion for now and later. This milestone underscores the importance of an inclusive workplace and organization, recognizing that greater inclusion leads to greater job satisfaction and employee engagement and better outcomes for our clients and their participants.”

APG is committed to Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) efforts. This is evidenced by the creation of several communities in recent years. Communities that give extra attention to different groups. That is why APG’s networks Connecting Cultures, YoungAPG and the Global Women's Forum were also present at the signing. Because D&I is about being able to be yourself and recognize yourself in the workplace.

APG organizes trainings on awareness of unconscious bias and LGBTQIA+ awareness. In addition, the various networks organize initiatives and this year APG started measuring the extent to which employees feel accepted and treated equally and experience diversity within the organization.

David Pollard congratulates APG on this move: “Just as APG is innovative in the financial sector, the Declaration is innovative by placing responsibilities for greater LGBTQIA+ workplace inclusion on both employers and employees. This collaborative effort, including the voice of the LGBTQIA+ community, is essential to creating workplaces where everyone can be themselves.”

Wuijster emphasizes, “At APG, we work with a wide range of talent, and it is crucial that everyone is given the same opportunities to develop and grow, regardless of origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, nationality or distance from the labor market. Any talent that wants to contribute is welcome at APG. This is not only morally right, but also enhances our ability to make a positive impact on society.”

Declaration of Amsterdam
The Declaration of Amsterdam is an important document created during a conference on the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in Europe. The conference took place in Amsterdam, hence the name. This document marks an important moment in the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement in Europe and establishes guidelines and goals to promote the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA+ people.

The declaration contains a series of recommendations and action points aimed at governments, organizations and other stakeholders. These recommendations are designed to combat discrimination and inequality, and to promote a more inclusive and respectful society for LGBTQIA+ people. It emphasizes the importance of equal rights, respect for diversity and the need for active efforts to combat stigma, discrimination and violence against LGBTQIA+ persons.

Although the Declaration of Amsterdam is not a legally binding document, it has symbolic value and serves as a guide for policymakers, organizations and individuals working to promote the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA+ people.
