"It's okay for women to work full-time"

Published on: 12 July 2024

Laura Bas (27) specializes in reaching and retaining young talent and is an advocate for gender equality. In her view, what is the importance of gender equality in the workplace? How does Generation Z view this issue? In an interview during the APG Talks event, she provides answers to these and other questions.

Bas, herself a 'zoomer', knows that her generation has grown up in a time where both parents had equal educational opportunities and were often equally educated. "This wasn't the case for previous generations, where you mostly see that fathers studied and mothers did not." Bas wants to emphasize that Gen Z is accustomed to equality between men and women. "Also because we have been encouraged from a young age to work together in diverse groups, not just with friends of the same gender."

The Wage Gap
But, Bas notes, when young people enter the workforce, they mainly see men in management positions. "Very confusing because we are not used to that. We immediately wonder why that is." Bas calls on companies to do better. "Close the wage gap. Guide more women to the top. Don't just say it, but take action. Set goals and measure those goals."

Personal Experience; Many Stereotypes
In the interview with Katherine Kucherenko of APG Asset Management, Bas also shares her personal experiences and the many stereotypes she still encounters. "When men and women start working, there is equality. But as soon as children come into the picture, this changes. Even for our generation. Women quickly feel the pressure to work part-time. We need to move away from that. It's okay for women to have a career and work full-time."
